Educating an Infant to Become an 'English Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Cost?

Child education concept
The organization responsible for the advert explains that what appears like "luxury or peculiarity" is truly "deliberate commitment in early-stage education".

"A household located in North London is looking for an remarkable and experienced educator to support their most junior child on his early path to turning into an English gentleman."

Looking at this post, you might readily skip the phrase "beginning" as mere a turn of phrase.

Yet, it might be the crucial aspect of this unique position posting, as it attempts to find a teacher for a 12-month-old.

Many of responses have since been sent in since the unidentified family published their request for the £180,000 per year tutor, who needs to be "an exceptional individual".

During the past few weeks, the listing has received interest in the news, with several questioning why?

Innovative Idea

The CEO, CEO and founder of an education consultancy, which is helping the family in their hunt, stated that despite initial doubt, he considered the concept "forward-looking", and "advanced".

When he met the family, he mentioned they understood the unconventional character of their request, and how early in age their son is.

But, they stated that they "preferred not to postpone any longer" to hire a tutor, as they had waited until their firstborn was five, and by that point "cultural conditioning had already become established".

But what did the family indicate by "cultural leaning"?

It's "all-encompassing", the expert replied. "How you eat, the manner you speak".

He said the elder child had adopted "really subtle, body language" from the family, and had taken on their cultural norms. The family informed the consultant they hoped to prevent history to repeat itself with their infant.

The strategy: To engage a British tutor, who needs to speak with Received Pronunciation, to influence the baby right from the beginning.

Tutoring discussion
The education firm claim the listing has started a wider discussion about how households regard schooling, privilege and the role of cultural environment in education.

Natural Absorption

"A lot of the development at the beginning here is kind of osmotic," said the expert.

It's through this osmosis that the family are expecting the child will adopt the British traits they wish to impart.

The consultant noted the tutor had to be somebody who studied at "the appropriate educational institutions – similar types of schools as the family aspire to send their son to".

"The instructor just has to be the suitable individual, they'll be performing things they aren't even aware they're doing, simply by nature," he said.

Expense Not a Factor

The family told him the chosen tutor should ideally also have understanding of or enthusiasm in equestrian activities, skiing, creative fields and music so as to shape the child in a wide range of hobbies.

Additionally though, he said the family hoped the tutor to enrol the child on a range of courses so the child would be "horseback riding and learning an musical instrument by the time they are around three years old".

In the family's view, guiding their son become a "English gentleman" will bring about achievement and open doors.

"Taking into account the pros and cons of that, because it's undoubtedly a class statement," he comments.

But, despite all this guidance in "Britishness", could the child pick up alleged cultural leaning from the multicultural family he lives with anyway?

"Yes", said Adam. "The family understand this could fail, but they've merely embraced the perspective of, 'why not attempt it and let's go as early as we can', because the cost of it is not relevant," he said.

Impractical

A number of in the tutoring industry who have those concerns.

Peter Cui, head and founder of an educational organization, who also offer private tutors, stated that "the journey of becoming bicultural, or in fact, forming one's identity, is something that must be lived into, not engineered."

Peter noted that he had emigrated from the Far East to the United Kingdom at the period of childhood, and had been brought up knowing and living two backgrounds. He continued to learn at a prestigious UK institution.

Peter Cui was the first individual born in China to be elected to the role of Financial Officer of the Cambridge Union.

"The notion that an individual can function as a embodiment of English culture, an individual who can somehow transplant the qualities of a English gentleman onto a one-year-old child, seems to me idealistic and unfeasible," he wrote.

"In my experience, employing a quintessentially British tutor from babyhood will does not necessarily create the outcome they desire.

"I wasn't provided with such a figure, and yet I have been lucky enough to experience numerous of the experiences they aspire for their son."

He continued: "The fact is, self-identity should not be dictated from the outside influences; it must be selected, and it must come from within."

Acquiring Englishness

Of course, UK identity is something the CEO hopes can be instructed – and commercialized.

"I think the fact that the world views us in this regard is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
